Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Will Unveil New Secrets About The Force

“It’s a place where people who believe in the Force would go on a pilgrimage,” Edwards says.

The Empire have taken over a planet where Force believers populate in Rogue One Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be the first in a whole host of Star Wars spin-off movies. Alden Ehrenreich recently landed the role of Han Solo in a spin-off movie of his own

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has a lot of expectation on it’s shoulders, not only will it be the first Star Wars spin-off movie, but it will look to expand the mythology of the universe as well. We’ve seen that in the past, when movies look to expand the universe and set up future movies, they often fail at being a success themselves.

The movie will be set before A New Hope and will follow a group of resistance fighters (Felicity Jones, Diego Luna) embarking on a daring mission to steal the Empire’s plans for the Death Star. Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) has expressed his desire to give the movie more of a “war” tone rather than a standard Star Wars tone.

But recently the director spoke to Entertainment Weekly about expanding the mythos of the force itself

“The Force is basically in Star Wars like a religion, and they’re losing their faith in the period that we start the movie,”  Edwards told EW. “We were trying to find a physical location we could go to that would speak to the themes of losing your faith and the choice between letting the Empire win, or evil win, and good prevailing,” he says. “It got embodied in this place we called Jedha.”

“It’s a place where people who believe in the Force would go on a pilgrimage,” Edwards says. “It was essentially taken over by the Empire. It’s an occupied territory… for reasons we probably can’t reveal. There’s something very important in Jedha that serves both the Jedi and the Empire. It felt very much like something we could relate to in the real world.”

“In a wider level, there must be loads of people who just believe in the Jedi and believe in the Force and have been affected by it,” Edwards stated. “If it’s a really ancient religion, as Obi-Wan Kenobi said, it’s got to exist in thousands or millions of people in the galaxy.”

We’re due to get a closer look at the movie this Thursday when it’s second trailer is released which the Star Wars brand has been teasing (see below)
