By Jay Hunter Arguably the biggest test DC had on their hands when announcing their new slate was getting people excited about the upcoming Aquaman movie. The character has often been mocked and never taken seriously, however Jason Momoa’s (Game of Thrones) pressuring new look and James Wan (The Conjuring) look set to change all that.

It’s safe to say from what we’ve seen from the character so far in Batman v Superman and the Justice League trailer, Aquaman may be the dark horse in the DCEU. Director James Wan is no stranger to high pressure movie franchises, with the billion dollar Fast and Furious series in his back pocket, Wan opened up to IGN about his hopes for the character;

“Yeah, I actually think it’s a brilliant move on Zack and co. to cast someone like Jason. Immediately, the whole joke aspect of Aquaman goes out the window. You have such a muscular, superhero-y character and one that is almost, to me, in some ways… I look at him, he’s kind of the Wolverine in some respect. He’s the outsider who gets pulled into this world and he kind of doesn’t want to belong and he was doing his own thing. And he prided freedom above everything else. That kind of plays nicely into who his character is. He’s like a reluctant superhero, right? He’s the reluctant king, basically, or would-be king.”

Suicide Squad is in cinemas now. Wonder Woman opens June 2nd, 2017; Justice League November 17th, 2017; Aquaman July 27th, 2018; the Batman solo movie is rumoured to be released October 5th, 2018; Shazam April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 June 14th, 2019, 2019; Cyborg April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern Corps July 24th, 2020.
