“There is no comic relief” – Danny McBride, Alien: Covenant

By Jay Hunter The Alien franchise is one of the most enduring titles in cinema history, despite poor titles outweighing the good throughout it’s 37 year history, the first two (arguably three) movies are so strong that they’re more than capable of holding up the Alien name.

Whilst Prometheus proved a false dawn for many fans of the Alien franchise, the news that Xenomorph Godfather, Ridley Scott will return to direct a “true” Alien movie conjured a real buzz throughout the community. The movie is due to arrive in cinemas August 4th, 2017 and as can be expected, many details are still shrouded in secrecy. With that being said, here’s what we know about Alien so far:

The cast and crew

Michael Fassbender will return as David (with a body!) Michael Fassbender will return as David (with a body!)

The movie be directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Prometheus). Alien will see Prometheus duo Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace return as android David and Elizabeth Shaw respectively. Also amongst the star studded cast will be Jussie Smollett (Empire), Amy Seimetz (The Killing), Carmen Ejogo (Selma), Callie Hernandez (Machete Kills), Katherine Waterston (Steve Jobs), Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight) and Danny McBride (This is the End).

With the xenomorphs returning to the franchise, it’s a safe bet to assume many of the aforementioned will be getting a few hugs. Shedding some light on the alien species, director, Scott had this to say:

“There was always this discussion: Is Alien, the character, the beast, played out or not? We’ll have them all: egg, face-hugger, chest-burster, then the big boy. I think maybe we can go another round or two.”

After Prometheus made a healthy $404 million at the box-office, Scott was originally playing with the idea of going back to helm a direct sequel. Prometheus 2 would’ve dug deeper into the Alien lore and perhaps expanded the universe in which they inhabited.

Parallel to this happening, District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp released some concept art for his proposed Alien 5 movie. His movie would’ve been a direct continuation from James Cameron’s Aliens and would’ve starred Michael Biehn and Sigourney Weaver. Designed to be a passing of the guard, Scott spoke to Empire stating that the movie will still go ahead, but after Covenant. This was confirmed by Blomkamp when he tweeted Alien is kinda holding/pending Prometheus 2”.

Alien: Covenant will act as a segway between Prometheus and Alien

Prometheus, Deacon Prometheus, Deacon

Prometheus was originally marketed to answer many questions that the Alien franchise had brought up along the way, ‘where do the xenomorphs come from?’, ‘who made them?’, ‘WHY did they make them?’. Although the movie did shed some light on these questions, he movie managed to shroud itself in more question marks than answers.

Alien: Covenant is due to rectify that, with Scott stating“They’re going to go to the planet where the engineers came from, and come across the evolving creature that they had made. Why did they make it? Why would they make such a terrifying beast? It felt bio-mechanoid, it felt like a weapon. And so the movie will explain that, and reintroduce the alien back into it.”
