Simmons will be giving a new take on the character, not seen before in the movies

By Jay Hunter – After images of Oscar-winner J.K Simmons emerged earlier this year of a jacked Commissioner Gordon (see above), it’s safe to say our expectations all shifted toward a different take on the character. Simmons recently revealed that he will not be on screen for a lot of time in the upcoming Justice League movie, but he has wrapped filming. Speaking to ET about his new movie The Meddler, Simmons had this to say:

My part is done. They are filming that for basically most of 2016, so some of the superheroes are still at work in jolly old London, but I’m back home with my family.”

Simmons went on to talk about his interaction with the League members. Saying other than Batman, it’s very minimal:

“Yeah, mostly with Ben. In this first installment of the Justice League, Commissioner Gordon is not a particularly sizable part. We just kind of introduce him and see a little bit of his interactions with Batman — and with most of the Justice League. That was a really fun set.”

Zack [Snyder] runs sort of a big, happy family and it’s obviously, in many ways, a very different work environment when you’re working on a big, giant movie like that than a relatively small movie like The Meddler. But at the end of the day, the director is the one who sets the tone. And one of the things that Zack and Lorene [Scafaria] have in common is they’re just nice, smart, competent, fun people that you don’t mind spending a 12-hour day with.”

Speaking about a new take on the character and his hope for multiple appearances in the DCEU, Simmons said:

“People of my generation remember Commissioner Gordon as this jolly, ineffectual Santa Claus type, and I think over the years in the comics there’s definitely much more of a badass side to him. One of the things that’s interesting to me is investigating hopefully a little bit more of that badass [side]…You’re living in a universe where it’s pretty tough to be a badass compared to somebody like Batman, but in the universe of non-superheroes I like the idea of Commissioner Gordon as a guy that can take care of himself, a guy that’s a real partner to Batman, not just a guy that turns on the bat signal and goes, ‘Help! Help, Batman!’

Justice League arrives in cinemas November 17th, 2017
