By Jay Hunter After recently discussing Donnie Darko‘s strange life before – and after – it’s screen release, I’ve been thinking about a movie. Just this week, acclaimed UK film critic, Mark Kermode asked what movies do you hold dear that you would most least like to see a sequel too. My answer was Donnie Darko, like a strange symbiotic destiny, it now looks like my dread will all be but confirmed. Discounting S-Darko, Donnie Darko is a movie that never needed a sequel, yet writer/director Richard Kelly seems to think otherwise.

During a recent interview with HMV, Kelly offered the following comments:

I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. I need to get my next film out of the gate and then we can go back and look at it.”

It’s certainly an interesting angle, given the fact I argued that Donnie Darko would never be a financial success – despite a new interest in independent cinema – because of it’s tones and target audience, a sequel may just prove to be a success. Kelly has enjoyed scarce success after Donnie Darko, with Southland Tales and The Box starring Cameron Diaz being less than memorable.
