The LEGO Batman Movie – Review

Brick by brilliant brick

By Jay Hunter They’re making a LEGO movie’ groaned the general public three years ago. A whopping 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes later, they were all floored and asking for more. Without a doubt, the star of the original LEGO movie was Batman – a rare commodity in today’s anti-DC market. Now three years later, the now salivating general public are gearing up for a solo LEGO adventure starring our favourite sarcastic caped crusader.

Will Arnet stars as Batman. Notably, off the *ahem* bat he has a ridiculous Christian Bale-parody gruffness in his voice. In irreverent and self-referential spirit, LEGO Batman tells the story of The Dark Knight once again saving Gotham against the maniacal Joker, dropping the lone vigilante card in search of a team mate.

Make no mistake, this is an extravagant two-fold advert; first for LEGO, secondly for Batman. But it’s so beat for beat hilarious, that it’s instantly forgivable. Speedy self-referential pops and jam-packed action sequences make Batmans lego counterpart a genuine contender to the live-action movies. All of this makes for a streamline kids movie that will be just as much fun for adults. The only choking hazard to be found is laughing too hard with popcorn in your mouth.
